naugatuck railroad Take a train ride through history along Journey through the past while the train travels along eight miles of the Naugatuck River. Crossing the river three times and passing through two 200-foot high gorge cuts, you will be on the only railroad in U.S. that runs across the face of a dam. And it’s less than an hour from New York.
The original Naugatuck Railroad was chartered in 1845, between Bridgeport and Winsted, adjacent to the Naugatuck River and was completed by May, 1849. The first regular train service began June 11, 1849. The Thomaston station itself was built in 1881 by the original Naugatuck Railroad. Currently, we have an extensive collection of over 80 rolling stocks, including locomotives of all types, passenger cars, freight cars, and cabooses. There are New England railroad artifacts dating from the 1840’s to the present everything from tickets to signal towers.
